SFX Youth Sports – Frequently Asked Questions

Who should I contact if I have a question?

Start at the Contact page and click the link to email the appropriate person for each program or age division. Though SFX Youth Sports is run by volunteers, we strive to answer all questions in a timely manner.

How do I register for your programs?

All programs and the registration button are listed on the homepage. If you have problems registering contact our registrar, Sean Edgar at sean@sfxys.com.

What are the registration dates and seasons for your programs?

Please find the information below. We manage each program by the number of coaches.  We encourage early registration as once we hit the maximum number of players for each session we will activate the wait-list. A late registration fee of $35 applies to all admitted players once the regular registration window is closed.

Please email Sean Edgar.

Can I request a particular coach, team or to be with a specific player?

We do our best (though we cannot guarantee) to honor player and coach requests. We ask that you place either the coach or player name in the request box in order to alert us to the request.

What are your program fees?

Program fees vary by season and sport. Refer to each program page for more details or contact the program director.

Do you offer refunds?

Recreational sports and clinics: We will refund the registration fee prior to seven calendar days before the season/session begins as long as the player has not received a uniform/shirt. Once a program begins or if the uniform/shirt is issued we will not offer a refund. We do incur processing costs associated with registration. Therefore a $35 cancellation fee applies for withdrawal from any program.

Refund Procedure: All refund requests must be made in writing to both sean@sfxys.com and the appropriate division coordinator listed on the contacts page.

Travel Sports: There will be no refund given when a player accepts an offer to play on a travel team.

Do you offer financial aid?

Financial aid is available to those that qualify to cover recreational program fees.  You must contact our registrar Sean Edgar for a financial aid form. The financial aid application and proof of income must be received prior to the start of the season/session.

Financial aid is not available for travel programs.

What happens of games, practices or clinics are cancelled?

We do not issue refunds for missed games, practices, clinics, sessions, etc. SFX programs use public and private fields and facilities for our program space. Programs that utilize outdoor as well as indoor space may be cancelled due to weather and other unforeseen events that are beyond our control. While we will not provide a refund for missed games, clinics, or other sessions, we will seek make up the missed session if it is possible. Unforeseen events include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, construction, school or parks department use, and a public health crisis, such as the recent COVID-19 Pandemic.

What happens if the season/session is cancelled prior to the start of the program?

In the event that a recreational program is cancelled before the start of the session due to loss of field permits or gym space due to events beyond our control such as the recent COVID Pandemic each registrant will be charged the $35 withdrawal fee.

How will I know if a game or program is cancelled?

For recreational sports we utilize our SFX Youth Sports Hotline or the Prospect Park Baseball Association Hotline (for spring recreational baseball and softball). You will find phone numbers on the weather hotline page.  Your team’s coach will also be notified about any cancellation. Coaches should send an email, text or utilize our registration system to notify as well. All indoor spaces follow the public school holiday and weather cancellations unless we notify parents of a change to that schedule and ask them to send a second layer of communications. Travel sports will receive contact from the coach.

When and where are practices?

Your child’s coach will decide the practice schedule and will share it with you before the season starts. Most recreational teams practice once a week, usually on a weekday in the late afternoon or evening. The practice location is also up to the coach. Many coaches hold their practice in a location of his/her choice in Prospect Park.

Do I have to come to practices or games with my child?

SFX is a recreational sports league and does not offer childcare. If you are the parent of a younger child, a parent or caregiver should be plan to be at practices, in case your child tires and needs to go home early, or needs to go to the bathroom. Once practice is over, you need to be there to take your child home. Older children often get themselves to and from practices.

When will I find out what team my child is on, and the schedule of games?

You will receive an email from SFX prior to the start of the season letting you know what team your child is on, and you will hear from your child’s coach shortly after. The schedule of games is published just before the season starts, and your child’s coach will share that with you as soon as he/she receives it. The schedules will be listed on SFXYS.COM under each sports page.

What equipment should I purchase for my child?

Please refer to each sports page for a list of necessary equipment on SFXYS.COM

I want to sponsor a team or donate.  How do I do this?

Please email SFX Youth Sports President John Piccard.

Can my child “play up” or “play down”?

Children can play up to an older division with the permission. Very rarely do children “play down” to a younger division, and only with the permission of SFX President for a valid medical reason. Children who play down will be extremely limited in the positions that they will be allowed to play.

How do I register to coach?

SFX Youth Sports is completely volunteer run.  We rely on dedicated volunteers to make a difference in the lives of our community’s children. You can register to coach by clicking the Register Now button on our homepage. Make sure to register as a coach using the same process that you used to register your player. If you have any questions regarding coaching please email the appropriate sport/division coordinator found on the Contacts page.

I dont want to be a head coach, but would like to be involved.  How can I do this?

Your child’s head coach will be thrilled if you volunteer to be an assistant coach. You can register by clicking the Register Now button on our homepage. You can also volunteer to be a Team Mom or Dad, and be in charge of making a schedule for team snacks, etc. Ask your head coach about this.

Do I need any special certifications to be a coach?

Every coach needs to become certified to use an AED, and renew the certification every two years. SFX schedules on-site trainings with the Park Department before the season starts. If you can’t attend one of these trainings, you could go to one of the trainings that the Park Department schedules on their own. Also, you’ll need to attend a “Safe Child” training session which is about sexual abuse awareness. You only have to attend this training once.
